Mega Pet Adoption Event Coming To Timonium Fairgrounds

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore's first ever mega pet adoption event is happening Saturday in Timonium.

WJZ's Ron Matz reports its your chance to give a homeless dog or cat a brand new home.

"A bunch of shelters are coming together to adopt out a lot of animals and hopefully clear our shelters," says Jennifer Brause, executive director of BARCS.

About 150 animals from the Maryland SPCA, BARCS, Baltimore County Animal Services and the Humane Society of Harford County will be available to adopt from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"This event is sponsored by the Petco foundation," she says. "They recognize its very important because we bring animals out into the community and that helps brings attention to those animals and helps them find really great homes."

And if an adoption fee has deterred you in the past, now's your chance to adopt a furry friend for free.

"All of the shelters are doing waive fee adoptions," says Jen Swanson, executive director of the Humane Society of Harford County. "That means the animals will be available for free. The regular adoption procedures will apply. The regular screening will take place. It will be first come, first serve. If you're coming to look at animals be prepared to take it home with you. Bring a carrier and bring your vehicle."

Dr. Melisa Jones, chief of Baltimore County animal services, says the goal is to completely clear the shelters to make way for new animals who need help.

"We're going to take every adoptable animal that we have and we're hoping they all leave from the event and we don't bring them back to the shelter."
