Sheila Dixon Will Not Seek Re-count Following Md. Primary Results

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Democratic mayoral candidate Sheila Dixon says she will not seek a re-count in the city primary.

She made the announcement in a statement released Tuesday afternoon:

"I'm relieved that this extended reconciliation process uncovered 555 provisional ballots from Baltimore City voters that would never have been considered otherwise.

But the fact remains that thousands of provisional ballots will not been counted.  According to the State Board of Elections, seventy-one precincts, including five of six early voting locations, cannot be reconciled with the materials they were given, though the election was certified regardless.  Out of 296 precincts, only thirty-six precincts and none of the early voting locations conducted the election correctly, according to data provided by the State Board of Elections.

While the City Board of Elections has re-certified the election results and I have decided not to seek a recount, the questions surrounding this election must be answered. The irregularities in this election are not acceptable. This process is not over until we can assure every Baltimore citizen that their vote will be counted not just in this election, but in future elections as well.

We will continue to demand answers, and I urge Baltimoreans to remain vigilant in demanding accountability and fairness in the election process."

Dixon had until today to make the decision.

Catherine Pugh will move on in the race for City Hall, going head-to-head with republican nominee, Alan Walden and green-party nominee Joshua Harris.
