Girl Revived After Falling In Baltimore Creek Dies

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The nine-year-old girl who was critically hurt after nearly drowning in Baltimore Creek over the weekend has died.

Amy Yensi has more.

The girl died after two days in critical condition. The tragic accident has parents in the community on edge.

The nine-year-old girl who fell into the creek near Herring Run Park died Tuesday. She had been fighting for her life since nearly drowning Sunday afternoon.

Fire officials tell WJZ the girl was walking along a drainpipe with friends when she fell into the water.

Police say another child somehow managed to pull the girl from the water and then ran to get help. A good Samaritan performed CPR on the girl, who had already stopped breathing. Emergency crews pronounced her dead at the scene, but her pulse later came back and they rushed her to the hospital.

The tragic accident happened as families packed the park for the holiday weekend.

"It's a tragedy. It's awful. I can't even imagine for the other children who saw it happening. It's just awful for everybody involved," said Tiara Hall.

The nine-year-old was a fourth grader at Sandalwood Elementary School in Essex. Her identity has not been released.

Some local parents worry the park is unsafe.

"Barricading that area where they do cross over so they don't get near the water would be a great improvement," said Margaret Warren, who lives across the street from the park.

Hall says adults should do their part, too.

"More parents. When I come here, there's usually a bunch of kids and no parents," Hall said.

Concerns that are heightened with school out of session and more children flocking to this park that has already claimed a life.

"It could have been my grandchildren because they play at this park all the time," said Karen Maple.

It's not clear if the girl and her friends had any adult supervision.

Counselors are being made available to her classmates at the Baltimore County school.
