ESPN's Eddie Matz Talks Orioles and Nationals

Eddie Matz, who covers the Orioles and Nationals for ESPN, joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to talk about Bryce Harper's struggles at the plate, the Orioles lack of starting pitching and the chances of the Orioles making a move at the trade deadline.

Bryce Harper is in the middle of a prolonged slump over the last month and a half. The reigning National League Most Valuable Player is hitting just .249. Matz talked about Harper's scuffles at the plate. "A lot of swings and misses…He's obviously frustrated. I assume he's going to come out of it. I don't think you can have a year like Bryce had last year, and have the pedigree he has and all of a sudden turn into an average baseball player."

The Orioles starting pitching continues to be the club's Achilles heel this season. Matz discussed the Orioles lack of consistent starting pitching. "Every time you think it can't get any worse, it seems to get worse. And right now, after last night's start by [Kevin] Gausman, what's worse is it really just seems like [Chris] Tillman is on an island right there by himself."

Most Orioles fans are wondering if the club will be able to bring in a starting pitcher at the trade deadline. Matz talked about what it would take for the Orioles to make a move. "In the Orioles case, the question still remains--who do they give up? What's the bait? Given what they have, I can't imagine them getting anybody who's going to be a high-profile, top-tier deadline acquisition."
