Dozens Dead After Explosions Rock Istanbul's Largest Airport

BALTIMORE (WJZ/CBS NEWS/AP) -- Three explosions rocked Istanbul's largest airport Tuesday, leaving dozens of people dead and dozens more injured, CBS News reports.

Three attackers blew themselves up at Ataturk International Airport after police fired at them, killing 36 people and injuring more than 140, according to Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

Turkish officials also say initial indications suggest the Islamic State group is behind the attack.

The U.S. State Department tweeted that they are working to determine if U.S. citizens are among the victims.

A White House official tells CBS News that the president has been briefed on the explosions.

In a statement made to WJZ, BWI airport spokesman Jonathan O. Dean says the facility "consistently operates with a high level of security" and "will continue to work closely with federal and State security agencies" in the wake of the attack.

"Aviation security involves multiple layers," Dean says. "There are some security measures in place that travelers would recognize. There are other procedures that would not be evident."
