After Attack In Istanbul, Local Airports Increase Safety Measures

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- After 42 people were killed and at least 270 more were injured in an attack on Istanbul's largest airport Tuesday night, BWI Thurgood-Marshall airport has increased patrols.

But experts say even security can't stop all threats.

In Istanbul, a suicide bomber detonated explosives in the parking area of the airport, allowing two other attackers to get inside.

It's similar to the March attack in a Brussels airport, where bombers set off explosives in an unsecured departures hall.

Public areas may be impossible to fully protect, according to officials, though security has been upped at local airports.

The attack in Turkey this week came as a record number of Americans are expected to travel for the holiday weekend.
