Allegany Co. Couple Found Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ) -- Homicide detectives are investigating the apparent murder-suicide of a couple found shot to death at an Allegany County home Tuesday, authorities said.

Troopers went to the couple's home, located in the 11000 block of Mount Savage Road, about 3:45 p.m. to perform a welfare check on George Whetstone, 39, of Corriganville, after coworkers reported he didn't show up for work, according to the Maryland State Police.

When no one answered the door, troopers went inside the home and found Whetstone and his girlfriend, Mary Preston, 46, of Corriganville, dead in an upstairs bedroom, police said. They had been fatally shot in the head.

Both were lying on the bed and a handgun was found between them, according to police. Based on evidence recovered from the scene, investigators suspect Whetstone shot Preston and then turned the gun on himself.

Police have interviewed relatives of Whetstone and Preston, but they're still working to uncover a motive behind the shooting. They're looking into the possibility that domestic issues may have played a role.

Their bodies were taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore, where investigators are awaiting autopsies to confirm the cause and manner of their deaths.
