Md. Boy, 8, Found In Cruise Ship Pool Airlifted, Hospitalized

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ) -- An 8-year-old boy from Maryland was hospitalized in critical condition late Thursday night after being found unresponsive on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, our sister station WCBS-TV in New York reports.

About 8 p.m., someone found the child in the swimming pool of the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Anthem of the Seas. He had gone without oxygen for roughly 18 minutes, according to a WCBS report.

The ship, which departed from Bayonne, N.J. in the afternoon, was between 5-10 miles offshore when the discovery was made. The ship changed course back toward port when treatment provided by the ship's medical staff was not successful, according to Royal Caribbean.

The New York Police Department, the New York City Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard met the ship and the boy was airlifted to a Staten Island, N.Y. hospital, officials told WCBS. At last check, he was in critical condition.
