18-Minute Firework Show Lights Up Baltimore Sky on 4th of July

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—The shells are loaded as crews get ready to light up Baltimore's sky this 4th of July at the Inner Harbor.

Technicians have been working throughout the day to make sure the fuses are perfectly tied.

And even with wet weather in the forecast, the show must go on.

"We actually planned, like a week in advance, and here we are. Then we see drizzles, so it's like, oh that sucks. But we're still going to have fun though," said Melissa Powell, who traveled from Baltimore County.

"Fireworks can go in the rain; however, if there's thunderstorms, lightening, torrential rains or any kind of conditions, we will postpone the fireworks," said Tracy Baskerville, Baltimore Officer for Promotion and the Arts. "And if we postpone the fireworks, it will be the next day."

Baskerville says the planned show is 18-minutes of fun filled excitement in the sky.  The fireworks are even choreographed to music.

"All the barges are synced with the music using a GPS system down the millisecond," said Mike Mugford, pyrotechnician.

Of course the night is all about having a good time and police want to keep it that way for everyone. Remember is this a fun event for the entire family, so when it comes to alcohol you're going to have to keep that in the bars and restaurants.

"Open containers of alcohol are prohibited on public streets across the city, including the Inner Harbor promenade festivity area," said Baltimore Police Col. Melissa Hyatt.

Families started arriving early Monday afternoon to spend the day at the harbor.

And they didn't forget their patriotic pride.

"And I  come from a big family, so to have everyone here, it's okay. One of my sisters is missing, but it's okay, we'll celebrate for her," said Powell.

At last check the fireworks are still set to go on as planned.

The U.S. Navy Band Cruisers will now be performing at 8:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.

The fireworks will go off at 9:30 p.m.
