Report: State Indicates Possible Appeal In New Trial for Adnan Syed

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Maryland's attorney general intends to fight a ruling that would grant Adnan Syed a new trial, according to our media partner The Baltimore Sun.

Syed is currently serving a life sentence since 2000, when he was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee.

Lee was found dead in a shallow grave in Baltimore's Leakin Park. One of Syed's friends claims that he even helped dig the hole to bury her.

The case has made national headlines after becoming the center of the popular podcast "Serial."

The podcast, which has been downloaded millions of times, examines the case and whether Syed was wrongfully convicted.

The Sun reports that the state formally notified the court of its intentions last Thursday and asks that trial process be halted as the process plays out.

The attorney general's office and Syed's attorney both declined to comment to the the Sun.

The new filing is not the appeal itself. The attorney general's office has until next Monday to official file for an appeal.
