Former A.G. Curran, 85, Tries To Thwart Robbery In Progress

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Once a crime fighter, always a crime fighter. You can say that about former Maryland Attorney General Joe Curran. He's 85 years old with a bad knee, but last month, Curran jumped in to stop a robbery happening right before his eyes.

The former attorney general had just picked up his dry cleaning at Belvedere Cleaners in the 6300 block of York Road when he went back because he forgot his cane on the counter.

"I just saw, 'Boom, boom,' and I thought he's got to know I'm right there," said Curran.

Mr. Curran found himself caught in the middle of an assault and robbery in progress on the clerk at the dry cleaners.

"I just saw this really frightened face of this young lady... 'Oh my heavens, what are you doing?'" he said.

That young lady was Yoo-Jin Kim. The suspect punched her in the face so she would open the cash register.

"I just hustled to the door and yelled, 'Robbery, robbery, call the police,'" said Curran.

But that's not all he did... Curran tried to stop the suspect from getting away.

"I was leaning one way to keep the door shut and he was pushing the other way, and at first, I was able to keep it shut, but he must have weighed at least 40 or 50 pounds more than me," said Curran.

So when that didn't work, Curran tried to trip him with his cane.

"I had my cane that I use and I tried to reach," he said. "It was just a desperate thing, I just lunged, and the truth is, he was out of range."

As the suspect ran out of the store, somebody got a photo him, which Metro Crime Stoppers posted on Facebook. The suspect is wanted for assault and robbery.

The robbery happened on July 11 just after 5 p.m. Baltimore City police have not yet caught the suspect.
