9-Year-Old Dead After Being Struck By Propeller Near O.C.

OCEAN CITY, Md. (WJZ) -- Authorities say a nine-year-old is dead after being struck by a propeller near Ocean City.

According to investigators, the incident happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday when two children fell off a pontoon boat in Sinexpuxent Bay, by Assateague Island.

Police the say the nine-year-old victim was killed after being struck by the boat's propeller.

An 11-year-old also suffered lacerations in the accident.

Maryland Natural Resources Police say six medics just happened to be on a nearby tour boat at the time. They jumped into the water to try to save the nine-year-old going into cardiac arrest, but it was too late.

So far this year, there have been at least 11 boating fatalities in the state.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Police have not yet identified the victims.
