Phelps, Ledecky Back In U.S. After Rio Olympics

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--After incredible performances at the Olympics, Maryland's top swimmers are back stateside, including Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky.

Gold medalists Katie Ledecky was greeted by a mob of fans at Dulles International Airport on her triumphant return to the U.S.

The Bethesda, Maryland native won four gold medals in Rio, smashed her own world record in the 400-meter freestyle and broke an Olympic record in the 800M freestyle.

Ledecky says she is so thankful for all the support.

"It means so much to me to have their support. And I felt it the whole week in Rio and first thing to see them when I get home it means so much to me."

Ledecky showed off her medals to the crowd and talked about her impact on the future generation of swimmers.

"We all had our goals in the pool, but we also had the goal to inspire other young swimmer other young kids who were watching on TV and hopefully we did that," she said.

And Baltimore's own Michael Phelps is back in the U.S. after a low key arrival with his fiancée Nicole and little Boomer at the airport in Phoenix, Arizona.

While Phelps still calls Maryland home, Michael bought a house in Phoenix to be close to his swimming coach, Bob Bowman.

Now, with 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold and the title of the most decorated Olympian of all time, Phelps says he's ready to enjoy time away from the pool.

Phelps says he will be back in Baltimore soon to visit his mom, but he plans on coaching and teaching in Arizona for now.

Michael and Nicole are also planning for their wedding.
