Phone Scammer Poses As State Trooper, Demands Money

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Maryland State Police are warning the public about a telephone scammer posing as a state trooper and demanding money.

On Tuesday evening, authorities were alerted of a phone scammer repeatedly calling an elderly Allegany County resident.

The victim, who is in her 70s, reported that she received multiple calls from a man with a "heavy foreign accent" telling her she owed $800 and would be arrested if she didn't come forward with the money.

The suspect identified himself as Lt. Dan Pickett, the commander of the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack, and appeared to call the victim from the barrack's publicly listed phone number.

Police want to remind citizens that the Maryland State Police Department does not collect fines for traffic or criminal offenses. All fines are collected by the Maryland court system.

If you have any information or have received similar calls, please contact Sergeant Heath at 410-761-5130.
