Officials: Burning Candle Caused Fire That Injured Baby, Left 'Hero Dog' Dead
BALTIMORE (WJZ)— Fire investigators have determined that a burning candle caused a fire that left a 8-month-old injured and the family's dog dead in Baltimore.
Firefighters rushed to a home on August 15 for a house fire in the 6800 block of Gough Street.
Upon arrival to the scene crews learned that an 8-month-old was trapped on the second floor.
When units entered the home firefighters found the baby lying next to the family dog, Polo.
According to the family's GoFundMe page, Polo laid over top of the baby as the fire spread, saving her from being burned over her entire body.
Fire officials say the 8-month-old remains in critical condition at this time.
Sadly, Polo died in the fire saving the young baby.

Authorities save during the night of the fire, severe thunderstorms knocked out power in the neighborhoods which left some residents resorting to candles to light their homes.
"Residents are reminded to never leave open fires unattended whether you are cooking or using candles, said Baltimore Fire Department Spokesperson, Samuel Johnson. "We recommend that you keep a battery operated flashlight and radio on hand in case of power outages and other emergencies."
