Vigil Held For Baltimore Student Killed In Canada, As Police Make Arrests
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police have made arrests in the case of a Maryland college student, beaten to death in Canada.
The family got word from police today that some arrests have been made in the case. WJZ has not yet been told how many, or what these individuals are charged with. However, it is a big step forward in getting justice for 26-year-old Julian Jones.
"Jones was a young visitor from Maryland was murdered in a flurry of punches and kicks," said a Canadian news reporter.
The violent beating of Julian Jones stunned Canada. A group of men attacked the University of Baltimore student, who was in Toronto for a bachelor party, leaving him for dead. Police confiscated a computer containing closed circuit camera images of the suspects. Investigators were confident they could identify those involved. Jones' father now says they've made arrests in the case.
"All the citizens of Canada, the US, whoever can help us, help us restore those feelings in mankind for all of us," said Julian's father Tobias Jones.
The case has shaken students at the University of Baltimore, where his son was set to graduate next year.
"I was shocked--definitely shocked," said Julian Jones' classmate Marshall Glaze, junior at University of Baltimore.
Marshall Glaze played basketball with Julian. Glaze says friends came together after his murder.
"We shared our love for each other just to make sure that if we don't see each other the next day, then we know how we feel about each other because you just never know nowadays," said Glaze.
The lead detective from toronto told WJZ Tuesday, he wants to ask the attackers about their motive.
"Why would you decide after a night out at a local club to engage or pick a fight with some males who had no interest in fighting," said Toronto Police Detective Rob North.
This unprovoked beating has left a community grieving.
"Life just got cut short. It's terrible," said Glaze.
The community held candlelight vigil for Julian Jones at his old high school in Anne Arundel County.
"I need to continue to help them understand the loss that we've had here. If they don't get these people to justice they'll kill others," said Tobias Jones.
Family and friends sharing stories of a life gone too soon.
"I want people remember who he was," said Jones' fiance.
They remember him as a man who could bring people together and bring joy even in moments of sadness.
"It's a lot of love. This is what Julian would have wanted," said
Police have not released the surveillance video. Police says there are at least two prime suspects they're looking for. There were as many as nine men in the group of attackers.
