Maryland House Representatives React To Trump Presidency

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Aside from two new faces, Maryland's congressional delegation has not changed. There are still seven Democrats and one Republican in the house.

Senior members of the House spoke with WJZ Political reporter Pat Warren about the Trump presidency, and if it might have a positive or negative affect on Maryland.

They say it could have both a positive and negative affect on the state, but that's not bad.

Donald trump's victory was as big a surprise here as anywhere.

"To be honest I was surprised, you knew it was going to be close, but you thought Hillary would win," said Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger.

"When we saw the margin in a Ohio of nine points, we're thinking this is it. This is the Rust Belt," Congressman Andy Harris.

Democrat Dutch Ruppersberger and Republican Andy Harris have a common interest, both represent a wide swatch of Maryland in the 1st and 2nd districts, and both sit on the House Appropriations committee.

Both tell WJZ, change in the political dynamic, won't negatively impact their ability to work together for the state.

"I'm looking forward to doing my job, working together, and I've always been pretty bipartisan in my politics," said Congressman Ruppersberger.

"We don't wear it on our sleeve we just work together and get the job done," said Congressman Harris.

Both agree that Maryland will remain an economic hub; from the port to the military to cybersecurity.

"I have a good relationship with Mr. Trump's staff, I know several of the senior members on the staff. Maryland is positioned very well I think in terms of the Trump administration," said Congressman Harris.

In a statement, Congressman Elijah Cummings says now is the time to look forward, not back. Former Lt. Governor Anthony Brown from Prince George's County and state Senator Jamie Raskin of Montgomery County join the Maryland delegation.
