Baltimore Celebrates National Adoption Day

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- This Thanksgiving dozens of Baltimore families have something extra to be thankful for. Courts across the country and in Baltimore are commemorating the 16th annual National Adoption Day with a special ceremony and message.

On Saturday, 25 Baltimore foster children officially found their forever homes. National Adoption Day celebrates these families and raises awareness for adoption.

"They are mine, nobody can take them away from me," said Regina K. Gee who adopted three children just in time for the holiday season.

Siblings Omani, Jaiden and Amiyah have a new last name and home.

"I'm fortunate enough for them to become a part of my family and now there are six," said Gee.

It was a day filled with tears, smiles and hugs. The adoptions were made official inside the Circuit Court for Baltimore City.

"To know they will spend the holiday season together with their forever families is amazing you can't put into words," said Erika Slater, National Adoption Day chairperson.

Baltimore City celebrated the annual event for the eleventh time that honors the families and emphasizes the need for adoption.

"Trying to get the word out that foster to adoption is a great way to change your life and the lives of these children," said Slater.

"Open your heart and be mindful they are just kids and they need love just as much as we do, and that's the most important thing," said Gee.

Nationally, there are nearly 130,000 children ready for adoption, including more than 150 right in Baltimore. Last year, 5,200 children were adopted across the U.S.
