Baltimore Fire Conducts Smoke Alarm Checks On Street Of Last Week's Fatal Fire

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- In encouraging the safety of the community, Baltimore Firefighters went door-to-door on Saturday, helping residents by conducting a sweep of smoke alarms in their homes.

This follows the death of a woman, 48-year-old Harriet Smith, on November 12, on Kenyon Avenue from smoke inhalation and thermal burns when a fire broke out in her home.

Members from the fire department canvassed communities citywide to interface and engage with citizens about the importance of fire safety. At the request of residents, firefighters will be installing 10-year lithium tamper-resistant battery smoke alarms.

Fire crews say they are hoping to help more preventable deaths like Smith's from happening, by doing a smoke alarm sweep and installing new alarms.

"When a fire occurs every second counts, we believe that by providing public education about the importance of smoke alarms and having more than one exit out of the home is critical in preventing fire fatalities."

Firefighters began in Smith's neighborhood, at the 3000 block of Kenyon Avenue in Baltimore.

Baltimore City Fire says there has been six fire fatalities in the City of Baltimore this year.
