Hampden's 34th Street Lights Kicks Off Saturday Night

Baltimore (WJZ) -- Residents of Hampden's 34th Street kicked off the holidays with their annual lighting of holiday lights and decorations on Saturday night.

"I've always wanted to come here. We just never had the time," said 34th Street visitor Rob Palmer.

Like the name of the beloved Christmas movie, for 70 years, Baltimore has produced it's own "Miracle on 34th Street", as the homes along one Hampden street block light up, spreading holiday cheer.

Many neighbors along the block decorate the front of their homes -- hundreds of bright lights, and a variety of unique decorations including a hub cap tree, Santa, reindeer, snowmen, Mr. Natty Boh and the Utz chip girl.

People from all over town come by to check out the local holiday tradition.

"I've passed by and seen it and walked down and looked at it, but I have never actually seen it occur," said visitor Willie Richardson.

"I'm excited and I'm not someone who is normally excited. I'm a bah humbug, but this might do the trick this year," he said.

"It's incredible how people can just set this up and have all these lights everywhere. It's basically like you're walking into a really bright room," said very excited kid, Henry.

The lights will be up through New Year's Eve.
