Maryland To Hold First Food Recovery Summit

LINTHICUM HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) — Maryland is holding its first food recovery summit.

The event in Linthicum Heights on Wednesday will bring together representatives from local, state and federal governments as well as nonprofits, the retail food industry, local schools and environmental groups.

They will be discussing how to avoid wasting food.

Topics are expected to include food recycling infrastructure, donations and food recovery outreach.

Ben Grumbles, the head of the Maryland Department of the Environment, is scheduled to give welcoming remarks.

The department says Maryland residents produce nearly 1 million tons of food scraps every year. Most of the scraps end up in landfills and waste-to-energy facilities.
