NFL To Debut 'Safest Helmet In Football' Next Season

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Player safety has become one of the biggest issues for the NFL in recent years.

According to Inc.com, 25 NFL teams purchased the new ZERO1 helmet from the Seattle-based startup company Vicis and will distribute them in practices this spring.

The ZERO1 helmets feature an impact-absorbing layer that "consists of columns of filaments that move omni-directionally and can respond to impacts from any angle and any location." This will help to better cushion the head against violent collisions.

"The helmet fits extremely well. The pressure is uniform. It's going to result in more safety. This is a multi-layered, highly-engineered solution and it will make a difference," says Vicis.

Here's how it works:

The helmet went through testing against 33 other brands to measure which would best reduce the severity of impact to the head, the Vicis ZERO1 finished first.

You may be seeing the ZERO1 on the field as early as this season.
