One Person Killed Overnight In East Baltimore Fire

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A fire near Bayview Hospital happened at the worst possible time, in the middle of the night.

An overnight worker at Bayview Hospital took pictures of the scene right as the firefighters arrived and were working to get water on the flames.

By this point, one person had run out the back door. Two people were inside, and one managed to escape.

At daybreak, the cold realization of what happened began to sink in.

Across the street, neighbors of 50 years, the Aquinos saw it all.

"I saw the lights flashing and I thought, what's going on and I came up and that house was engulfed in flames," says neighbor Delores Aquino.

Inside the home, an elderly man was found upstairs in a back bedroom

"So I knew they were home and I just prayed that they were ok but it was so hard to think that they would make it the way the flames were so bad," says Aquino.

They say the couple was in their 90s.

And they were still active In fact, they had just returned from spending the winter in Florida.

No firefighters were injured.

The fire department says that the wife is at a nearby hospital in good condition.
