Maryland is home to the two largest indoor rock climbing centers on the East Coast. Earthtreks as facilities located in Timonium and Columbia and offer over 15,000 square feet of climbing space. The climbing center in Timonium reaches 50 feet and has hosted three National Championships. Climbers of all skill levels are welcomed to train on one of three teaching areas. Nicknamed "Big V Rocks," Big Vanilla's climbing wall measures 40 feet high and suitable for all ages and skill levels. Their wall is made up of five faces of different difficulty and challenges. Classes and climbing certification are available for those wanting to climb during non-staff hours. Big Vanilla Athletic Club is located next to Anne Arundel Community College and provides equipment along with a knowledgeable staff. When the weather is not cooperating, get a fulfilling work-out at Big Vanilla of Arnold.

Members of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Family Center Y at Stadium Place have access to an indoor climbing wall. The 25-foot high climbing wall has four faces at different skill levels. Work on balance and mental control as you make your way up the wall. Not one of the bigger indoor rock climbing walls around Baltimore, it is perfect for beginners and those looking for exercise but not the heights. Learn new robe knots and meet new people in the sport of indoor rock climbing.

Make the climb to Rockville for indoor rock climbing sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Small group rates are available, but solo climbers are always welcomed. The climbing wall is located at the Rockille Civic Center Park and cost $10 to climb. Improve your climbing technique and master climbing holds before you take your skills to the outdoors.

Mention Burdick Hall to a Towson University student and you will soon hear about the indoor rock climbing gym. Staffed by qualified student climbers, Peregrine's Nest Climbing Gym stands at 33 feet, covering 3,500 square feet of climbing room. Mapped out are 40 climbing routes ranging from beginner to expert. The climbing wall is only available to Towson students but private use is available during closed hours. Call for two-hour sessions or for organized team-building activities. Climb up and take on bouldering, top rope and lead climbing courses.
