Best Waffles In The Baltimore Area

There's no menu of items more iconic and universal than breakfast. But one item that often gets overlooked is the humble waffle. When made incorrectly, waffles can be bland and tough. However, if they are made right, waffles are buttery, fluffy and delicious when covered with a wide variety of toppings from meaty chicken to healthy fruit. We've located the go-to places in the Baltimore area to renew your love for this classic breakfast meal.

Looking for a top-notch breakfast or brunch experience in Ocean City? The popular stop is General's Kitchen. General's comes off like a small-town diner tucked away under a motel; but it is clean, the service is friendly, the portions are big and the food is delicious. Also, it's not very greasy at all.

Most famous for its chipped beef, General's serves up this East Coast breakfast classic with a creamy and delicious texture which warms and fills while not tasting too greasy. You may order the chipped beef on absolutely everything, including the Belgian waffle. Don't knock it until you've actually tried it. The chipped beef fills in the waffle holes, forming a seamless blend of sweet and salty, meaty and doughy combination that will definitely have you coming back. Want to try before you buy? General's is so sure of the quality of its chipped beef dishes that it will gladly serve you a sample so that you can see what all the fuss is about.

If you want your waffle to be just a waffle, just ask. General's will be happy to serve it to you that way as well.

Wings & Waffles definitely comes off with that Charm City charm. Not pretentious looking by any means, Wings & Waffles sits on the corner looking like a down-home Baltimore restaurant. Walk on in and let the menu overwhelm you.

This spot is called Wings & Waffles for good reason, but it carries practically every hometown taste that makes the Baltimorean palate sing. With salmon, crab cakes, shrimp and (of course) chicken wings, this soulful soul food sensation simply fills the stomach in style.

The chicken and waffle combination involves fried, boneless chicken breast, breaded and seasoned to a mouth-watering perfection, served over a waffle the size of a manhole cover that is powdered with sugar. Pour some classic diner syrup on the whole thing and have yourself a true Baltimore experience like none other.

If you want more traditional breakfast waffles, try one of the fruit-topped waffles. Your choices include strawberry, banana or blueberry (or all three). Honestly, the name of the restaurant speaks for itself.

Miss Shirley's is an upscale establishment that caters to middle- to upper-class families. The interior is clean and well decorated, and the foods are served not just to be delicious but also to look like something from a magazine.Whether or not that is attractive to you personally, the breakfast (and brunch!) is second to none.

Miss Shirley's has won impressive accolades, including Sun Magazine's Reader's Choice Award 2014 and Best Family Friendly Restaurant in a 2014 Baltimore Magazine poll. One of the things that makes Shirley's both attractive and unique is its creativity when it comes to food. Where else could you get a breakfast banana split (substituting yogurt for ice cream) or jalapeno smoked bacon cinnamon rolls? Of course, at the very top of the specialty menu is the signature benne seed chicken 'n waffles. Don't expect grandmother's chicken 'n waffle recipe here. Shirley's proves its creativity with this dish by serving it up with fried boneless chicken breast pieces and a honey mustard aioli drizzle on cheddar green onion waffles. This is topped with peppadew-jalapeno butter, and finished off with a dusting of cajun spice.Want something a touch more traditional? Not to worry, Shirley's has you covered with mini Belgian waffles (four per order) or its sampler tray of four berry waffles (blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry).

Still want more waffle choices? Try the specialty waffle menu, which includes cinnamon danish waffles drizzled with cream cheese icing, fresh banana, blackberry, blueberry or strawberry waffles, white chocolate and chocolate chip waffles drizzled with chocolate syrup or raspberry white chocolate waffles.

For a world class experience in waffles, all from the comfort of Baltimore, Miss Shirley's is definitely your top stop.

Simply Marie's
3023 Elliott St.
Baltimore, Md. 21224
(410) 342-0822
www.simplymariesbreakfast.com

Simply Marie's is exclusively a breakfast and brunch locale and a true family restaurant, meaning it is actually operated by a family. The owner is also the cook, and the food is served in a Southern style rare to find in the Baltimore area. This is probably because the owner/cook brought her skills up north from her home state of North Carolina.

Owing to the fact that this is a small-time diner and all of her food is prepared lovingly from scratch, Simply Marie's doesn't exactly impress with the speed at which the food is served; however, for the flavor, it is well worth the wait. One tip would be to call your order in ahead of time.

What to order? Well everything is good. All of the classic Southern breakfast foods are on the menu, including grits, home fries and sausage gravy and biscuits. But for a more mouth-watering choice, you cannot beat the chicken and waffles.

You get three large chicken wings and one large waffle. The wings are grilled and seasoned in a way that is simple yet delicious, and the waffle is served up buttery and piping hot. Marie's is especially proud of this particular dish. It occupies the top spot on the menu and will undoubtedly occupy the top spot in your heart when you've eaten your first meal here.

Teavolve caters to the more sophisticated crowd who are equally at home in a Starbucks or Panera Bread. If you want to have your breakfast a little less greasy and a little healthier, Teavolve manages to keep the food both flavorful and nutritious. The waffles are buttery-tasting and fluffy, but the choice of toppings is what really makes them impressive. Load your waffle up with any combination of strawberries, bananas, toasted almonds, whipped cream, walnuts, pecans or Nutella (each topping is an additional $1 to the $5.50 price of the waffle itself). For a classy breakfast experience that doesn't leave you feeling guilty about your calorie intake afterwards, Teavolve doesn't disappoint.Related: Best Fried Chicken In Baltimore
