Top Summer Volunteer Opportunities For Families In Baltimore

Volunteering is a way of helping others, especially those who might be less fortunate than oneself. There are mutual benefits for the person who volunteers as well as the recipient. By volunteering, one can learn new skills and gain a feeling of usefulness and appreciation while practicing the principle of reciprocity. In the Baltimore area, there are several different places where volunteers are needed and wanted.

The purpose of Gather Baltimore is to prevent food waste and create healthier food habits for residents. Each week provides an opportunity for volunteers to serve by sorting and bagging food donations for distribution. Gather Baltimore is located in northwestern Baltimore City. Hours of operation are: Thursdays - Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

This is an opportunity for the entire family to have fun. The project is an all-inclusive playground to be built by the community. The community build event will take place from July 8, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. - July 18, 2016 at 9:00 p.m. There is something for everyone to do at this Baltimore County location. According to the website VolunteerMatch, "There are many possible areas where volunteers will be needed to help, including playground construction, food service, childcare, materials & tools management, volunteer check-in, and so many other areas."

Located in the downtown Baltimore area, Weinberg Housing and Resource Center provides an opportunity for families with teens to give back to the community. Volunteers are always needed to serve meals to the clientele in a restaurant style setting. This is a good time to not only interact with people in need, but also to reflect upon one's own blessings. Volunteers are needed daily from 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

The Pearlstone Center is a conference and retreat center which has opportunities to improve its immediate environment. Volunteers are needed to help plant and cultivate the land around the center. According to the website, "projects can take the form of plantings seeds, cultivating in the garden, environmental restoration projects, or harvests." Opportunities are available from April to October. The hours of operation are Mondays - Fridays from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Just Tryan It will hold a triathlon race to help children who are battling cancer. Volunteers are needed to be a part of the committee and to assist on the day of the race. Opportunities are available involving packet assembling, registration to clean-up and everything in between. The race will take place at The Park School in Baltimore on September 11, 2016 from 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Proceeds will benefit families in their battle against pediatric cancer. Registration has already begun.
