Waterfront Partnership Ice Rink Now Open At The Inner Harbor

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- The Waterfront Partnership Ice Rink has officially opened in downtown Baltimore. As Linh Bui reports, what this rink will bring to the community and residents.

The new ice rink, located at McKeldin Square on East Pratt Street is already drawing a lot of people to the Inner Harbor. One of those people, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, was among the first group to hit the ice.

"I can't wait to see the families down here enjoying themselves. You know, I hope this turns in to something like you know like iconic, like you know, like in New York with Rockefeller Center," Rawlings-Blake said.

Many people haven't skated in years, but agree it's a great addition to downtown. Olympic figure skater, Kimmie Meissner, thinks the ice rink location is perfect.

"It's great to have it right here, kind of in the center of everything and it's great to just have it back in Baltimore," Meissner said.

The Inner Harbor has not had an ice rink for about a decade after the one at Rashfield closed. The grand opening of the ice rink kicks off the 4th annual, It's A Waterfront Life campaign, an effort to bring more people downtown during the holiday season.

Some people, including Laurie Schwartz, president of Waterfront Partnership, feel like people don't think about going to the Inner Harbor if it's not spring or summer.

"It's not always first of mind in the winter and we want to make sure it is, especially locals," Schwartz said. "This is our harbor, we want our local residents, employees to come down and have fun."

The ice rink will be opened seven days a week until Jan. 19, even on Holidays.
