2014: The Year In Baltimore Sports Scandals

As 2014 winds to an end, we went back to take a look at the most viewed sports stories of the year as determined by your clicks.

What we found, a little to our surprise, was not the Orioles surprising run to the AL East Championship & sweep of the Tigers in the playoffs in the Top 10.  It was also not Ravens training camp or the unveiling of the Ray Lewis statue at M&T Bank Stadium....it was the scandals & Baltimore had plenty of them this year.

2014 was a tough year for Baltimore sports figures, teams & their fans.  The numbers indicate the interest in those stories the general public has.

So, here's the list.

 

10. Ravens Fans Wait In Line For More Than An Hour To Exchange Ray Rice Jerseys

Hundreds of Ravens fans, maybe even thousands, lined up to exchange Ray Rice jerseys at M&T Bank Stadium.

9.  Ravens Offensive Lineman Jah Reid Arrested On Battery Charges

Ravens reserve offensive lineman was arrested on 2 counts of battery following an altercation at a Key West strip club. He eventually avoided trial & was accepted into a diversion program.

8. Controversial Ray Rice Costume Making Waves On Social Media

Offensive, racist, sexist. Those were just some of the words used to describe a costume some were dressing up in for Halloween.

 

 

7. O's Slugger Chris Davis Suspended 25 Games After Positive Drug Test

On the heels of the Ray Rice news Chris Davis, one of the Orioles' most productive and popular players, was suspended after a positive drug test for Adderall & missed the end of the season & the playoffs.

6. Molly Shattuck Indicted On Charges Related To Sexual Contact With Minor

Former Ravens cheerleader Molly Shattuck was indicted on charges related to the sexual abuse of a minor. Shattuck, a socialite, was also the estranged wife of the chairman of Exelon (which owns BGE )  at the time.

5. Five Reactions To The Ray Rice Suspension

Before the dust even settled, businesses and individuals alike were reacting and taking action. Some of these reactions  made major headlines, while othersdid not. We found 5 reactions that really stood out to us.

4.  Towson Cheerleaders Drank Alcohol, Danced In Diapers In Alleged Hazing Ritual

Drinking and diapers. The hazing allegations at Towson University went public. The school's top ranked cheerleading team was suspended for a semester following an off-campus incident.

 

3.  Michael Phelps Responds After DUI Arrest

The Baltimore bullet was arrested for driving under the influence in Baltimore City following a night at the Casino. Phelps plead guilty this December & received no jail time.

2. Ray Rice Fights Back Against Ravens For Wrongful Termination

The running back filed a grievance against the Ravens for wrongful termination of his $3.5 million contract.

The explosive video that made  TMZ  a legit(?) news source & started in motion the top sports scandal of the year that saw NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell & The Ravens reacting , holding awkward press conferences & playing CYA as fast as they could.
